The mystical area of central Java is renowned for its temples, markets and natural landscape. At its heart lies Borobudur, the greatest Buddhist temple in south east Asia, and one of the main attractions of this area. Go at dawn and watch the sun rise up over the surrounding hills and, if you are staying at the near by Amanjiwo, travel back by elephant through the villages.

Traditional dance, music and puppet shows are to be found everywhere but dont miss Yogjakarta, an important centre for contemporary art, silverware, batik and Indonesian furniture.
