Satpura Mountain Range, India

Satpura National Park

Satpura is uncharted and unspoiled and represents wilderness at its very best. This reserve is part of one of the largest contiguous blocks of forest left in India and is still connected to other reserves by forest ‘corridors’.

Satpura National Park is cradled in the Satpura Range of the Mahadeo Hills and straddles the State of Madhya Pradesh. Satpura National Park provides 1427 square kilometres of unique Central Indian Highland ecosystem. This region, therefore, represents the largest block of tiger habitat left in the world.

Why visit Satpura National Park

The magnificent deep valleys, high mountains, rivulets, waterfalls and vast reservoir combine to give this park a unique beauty. The terrain is extremely rugged and consists of sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, ravines and dense forests and the altitude ranges from 300 metres to 1352 metres.

Satpura has over 50 tigers in its core area. The Doob areas, with open grassy slopes flanked by thickly wooded jungle and small water bodies, are perfect grazing habitats for deer and gaur.

Activities at Satpura National Park

In addition to jeep safaris, visitors can also opt for canoeing on the river, and a jungle walk. A trip to the core area is highly recommended and will result in the best sightings. A new species of gecko has been discovered in the Satpura Hill ranges, named Eublepharis Satpuraensis after the location it was found in. The endangered Indian skimmer has been spotted near Pattan in the Madhai range. The Tawa reservoir recedes in the summer forming new sandbanks that act as an excellent breeding ground for these birds.

Satpura is accessed by a short flight from Mumbai or Delhi to Bhopal followed by a five-hour drive or it’s possible to take a train. Satpura combines well with Kanha and Pench.

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.
