Sitting at the mouth of the inappropriately named Perfume River, this former royal capital has a Citadel modelled on the Forbidden City in Beijing. A boat journey upstream will allow you to explore the Valley of the Kings where many of the country's emperors are buried in elaborate tombs. You can also visit local cottage industries such as those manufacturing incense sticks and the traditional Vietnamese conical hats.
