A succession of invaders has left its mark on Andalucia, but the most notable were the Moors, who ruled there for almost eight centuries. The monuments left in their wake represent some of Spains greatest architectural heritage.
The Alhambra, described as "the most sensual building in Europe" , is a definite 'must see'. while the Mezquita, Cordobas great mosque, Sevillas Royal Palace, and La Giralda, the tower adjoining the city's huge Gothic cathedral, are examples of the brilliance of the North African conquerors.
Andalucia also has its share of important Prehistoric sites, with Paleolithic caves at Cueva de la Pileta featuring primitive underground graffiti, and a group of 3rd Millennium BC dolmens representing early low-level housing at Antequera.
