Fly London to Amman

Day 2

Full Day of Sightseeing in Jerash and Ajloun
Travel to the north of the country and the site of Jerash. This city is remarkable for its unbroken chain of human population. There you will find remains from as far back as Neolithic times, but Jerash's golden age really arrived with Roman rule. Today with many of its richly embellished marble and granite structures still standing, it is acknowledged as one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world.

A short journey west through pine forests and olive groves will bring you to Ajloun and the castle of Qala'at Ar-Rabad. A fine example of Islamic architecture, the fortress dominated a wide stretch of the north Jordan Valley and protected communication routes between south Jordan and Syria. Today it is a fascinating warren of towers, chambers and galleries while its hilltop position offers staggering views of the Jordan Valley.

Day 3

Amman-Petra on the Kings Highway with Sightseeing

Travel south and join the 5,000 year old King’s Highway. Stop at Mt Nebo the memorial of Moses, the presumed site of the prophet’s death and burial place, with views across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Ten minutes further on is Madaba, ’the City of Mosaics’. Madaba’s main attraction is the contemporary Greek Orthodox Church of St George, which is home to a wonderfully vivid 6th century Byzantine mosaic map showing Jerusalem and other holy sites.
Next stop is the Crusader fort of Kerak, which is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and endless passageways. The castle, whilst more imposing than beautiful, remains an example of the Crusaders’ architectural military genius.

Day 4

Full Day Sightseeing of Petra
Visit the city of Petra, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a private local guide.
Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in south Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. From here they dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia, levying tolls and sheltering caravans laden with Indian spices and silks, African ivory and animal hides. The kingdom endured for centuries and became widely admired for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels. By 16th century, however, Petra was completely lost, and remained so for 300 years until it was rediscovered by a Swiss traveller, Burckhardt, in 1812. View the 'Treasury', Roman-style 3,000-seat theatre, and numerous temples, facades, tombs, baths and funerary halls as well as the Petra Archaeological Museum and the Petra Nabataean Museum.

Petra by Night
An additional option would be to visit Petra by the light of 1,800 candles. Walk through the Siq to the Khazneh following a candle-lit path and enjoy the haunting music of the Bedouin at the Treasury.

Day 5

Morning at Leisure with Suggestions
This morning you could:
- Re-enter the site of Petra to do some additional sightseeing.
- Spend the morning at your leisure
- Visit Little Petra (Siq Al-Barid) with some rare examples of Nabataean paintings

Travel from Petra to Wadi Rum

A journey of approximately three hours, travelling by 4x4 across the desert. Admire the sweeping vistas of this harsh landscape, stopping to visit a collection of well-preserved petroglyphs en route.

The largest and most magnificent of Jordan's desert landscapes, Wadi Rum is a protected area covering 720 square kilometres of dramatic desert wilderness. Huge mountains of sandstone and granite emerge, sheer-sided, from wide sandy valleys to reach heights of 1700 metres and more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains many of which conceal ancient rock drawings etched by the peoples of the desert over millennia. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Rum and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape.

This unspoilt area offers challenging climbs, colourful hills and canyons for trekking on foot, on horseback or by camel and, in the springtime, a colourful explosion of 2,000 species of wildflower.

Travel from Wadi Rum to The Dead Sea

A journey time of approximately three and a half hours.

The Dead Sea valley is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers and is a natural greenhouse rich in minerals. In ancient times it was one of the most fertile places in the Middle East and some of the world's oldest civilisations sprang up here.
