Guilin's charm lies in its natural scenery. Limestone peaks rise up from a flat plain and their formation resembles droplets of water falling in slow motion into a dead-calm lake. Each is covered in thick vegetation while rivers meander slowly between them. Water wheels irrigate the fields and men fish with cormorants from bamboo rafts in the Li River.
Nearby are 800 year old terraces still farmed by the Zhuang tribe, who wear traditional costumes and live in their traditional houses. Another group who inhabit the area are the Yao, or Long Hair, people, whose women grow their hair to the ground and can be seen combing it out by the mountain streams.
