Journey Ideas
A highlight of any journey to Bhutan is to visit a Tsechu or festival. The most important day of the religious calendar, they are held annually at each Dzong.
To the accompaniment of horns and trumpets, monks, dressed in elaborate costumes with fearsome masks, whirl and dance in the courtyard of the monastery. Each play depicts a local legend acted out through dance and ribald comedy in the best Shakespearean tradition. Families, from all around the valley, dressed in their most elaborate jewellery and brocades, come to watch, providing a wonderful depiction of local life.
Needless to say, hotel beds are in great demand over these few days so it is necessary to book months in advance to secure accommodation.
Please request a current list of festivals from Charlotte if you wish to experience one during your stay in Bhutan.
