Travel from Johannesburg to Madikwe
One of South Africa's largest game reserves, Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five and has a healthy African wild dog population. Bordering Botswana, which lies to its north, the reserve is one of the best run in the country. Some 8000 animals including lion, elephant, cheetah, rhino and buffalo were introduced to the reserve during one of the biggest wildlife translocation projects in the world, "Operation Noah" some 20 years ago and have flourished in this unique environment.
A Typical Day on Safari
Explore the Madikwe Reserve, found on the edge of the arid Kalahari region. Richly diverse and packed with wildlife, this area is a wonderful place to spot an array of impressive animals, including resident wild dog. Game drives run twice a day, with afternoon drives extending into the night, allowing for the spotting of - often elusive - nocturnal species. As the sun sets, stop for sundowners amidst this magnificent landscape. For a different experience, set out on foot and take part in a guided walking safari. Learn about the nuances of the bush and spot the tell-tale clues that big game leaves behind.
