Drive from San Pedro Sula to Copan

Sitting in a fertile river valley, Copán is considered by many archaeologists to be one of the most spectacular Maya cities. The city was once formed part of the three largest and most lavish cultural centres of the New World; it is said to have some of the most beautiful pre-Columbian art in the Americas.

Packed with examples of Maya architecture and of huge archaeological significance, this ruined city is a UNESO World Heritage Site. The modern town of Copán Ruinas lies close to the ancient ruins and, despite its tourist appeal, retains a peaceful colonial vibe.

Day 3

Half Day Tour of Copan's Ruins
Copán remained engulfed in jungle until the 1930s, when the Carnegie Institute finally organised for the ruins to be liberated from the forest's clutches. Excavations and reconstruction have continued since then, finally exposing this glorious city's hidden architectural treasures.

Spend time exploring Copán and examining the city's sites, accompanied by the colourful scarlet macaws that call the ruins their home. See the famous intricately-carved stelae, a stunning reconstructed hieroglyphic stairway, archaeological tunnels and excellent museum.

Afterwards, visit Los Sapos, ancient toad-shaped rocks. It was here that Maya women when to give birth.

Half Day Visit to the Bird Sanctuary
Head to Copan's Bird Sanctuary and spend time admiring its colourful inhabitants. The Bird Sanctuary is a project dedicated to saving Honduran native bird species and their habitat. It is located in nine acres of old growth forest close to Copan and contains a fascinating array of bird life.

Visit Finca El Cisne and have the opportunity to explore the remote countryside on horseback. Take part in a group tour of the farm and meet the owner, Carlos. Follow him on a tranquil horseback ride through the farmlands and beautiful scenery of the Copan Valley.

Afterwards, sit down for a hearty farmhouse lunch, cooked by Carlos' mother, and taste the coffee grown on the farm. In the afternoon, explore the coffee and cardamom plantations, as well as learning about cattle ranching. On the way back to Copan, stop to take a dip in the hot springs.
