Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas and a Travel-Happy New Year from all at Steppes Travel.

Eating until you burst, avoiding the coffee creams in the chocolate box, watching the Queen’s speech or roasting chestnuts on an open fire; we all have our own traditions at Christmas, but we thought we’d share a few of our favourites from around the world.

Christmas in Ukraine

Spider webs are hung on Christmas Trees, this originates from a story of a family too poor to decorate their tree, who awake on Christmas day to find it has been decorated by spiders.

Christmas in Spain

In Spanish households a character called ‘El Cagner’ is hidden amongst the nativity scene. It translates as ‘The Great Defecator’ and is thought to fertilise the following year for a good harvest!

Christmas in Venezuela

In Caracas the streets are shut to traffic and everyone roller-stakes to Church for mass. At midnight the cry of ‘Jesus is born’ and the beat of drums can be heard throughout the city.

Christmas in The Falklands

The whole community celebrates with a huge sports day at Stanley Racecourse – bull riding, sack races and finally a raft race on New Year’s Day, where the aim is not to sink!

Christmas in Greenland

The dish of the day in Greenland is called Kiviak. A piece of raw auk is wrapped in seal skin and buried for months until it is decomposed. A tradition not for the faint hearted!

On Christmas Eve all of the brooms and mops are hidden in the houses of Norway. It is believed they will be stolen by witches who will ride into the night on them.

A week in early December, celebrates scary Krampus, Father Christmas’ evil twin, who punishes naughty children in Austria. Local men dress up and run around hitting people with sticks!

New Year in Chile

In the town of Talca, residents head into the graveyard after mass on New Year’s Eve. Playing classical music and carrying candles they greet the New Year among departed loved ones.
