A 'Discovery' of Wildlife

One may feel a little self conscious referring to an 'ostentation of peacocks' or a 'convocation of eagles' but one cannot deny the quirkiness and at times poetic quality that collective nouns for wildlife posses. Whether colloquial oddities or scientifically certified, the collective noun has an eccentricity that appeals to the English sense of humour (and pub quiz bores!) Below are a few of our favourites.

A 'Crash' of Rhinos

Not known for their subtlety and finesse, a crash seems the perfect term for a group of rhinos, although if you've ever been on the wrong end of a charging rhino then the term is probably a little close for comfort! Join Dave Carson, our guide in Zimbabwe, doing what he loves best; tracking rhinos on foot.

Dates: September 2011 Price: £2,125

A 'Memory' of Elephants

Scientists have proven that the temporal lobes of an elephant's brain (linked with memory) are far more developed than humans, and that memory is an essential survival mechanism for elephants in the wild. Join our experts in monitoring giant elephant herds in the wilds of Botswana.

Our 5 day tour places you in the heart of these endangered gorilla families and visits the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, to help you decipher their unique vocal sounds and behaviour.

A 'Sleuth' of Bears

The term 'sleuth' probably originates from sloth, a misnomer as anyone that has seen a brown bear running will testify! Solitary animals except during breeding, cub rearing and when grouped around food resources, our safari offers the chance to witness multiple bear activity from a comfortable hide in Halsingland.

Dates: August 2011 Price: £695

A 'Throng' of Tourists

When you travel the path less trodden with Steppes Discovery, the tourist throng is thankfully, rarely encountered. This could not be truer than in Congo and CAR where Lowland Gorillas and Forest Elephants outnumber the tourists in the National Parks where only the intrepid tread.

Dates: August 2011, September 2011 Price: £3,695
