El Salvador and Honduras - Highlights

17 days

from £3,295pp

El Salvador is tiny, but it is a gem and named the ‘half an hour country’ due to the proximity – of well, everything being little more than half an hour way, it doesn’t take long to navigate. So with this in mind, we have combined a visit to El Salvador with some of the highlights of Honduras, providing a truly in-depth journey of two of the most rewarding, yet often overlooked, Central American countries.

  • Visit sleepy villages and share a papusa with the locals
  • Drive the Ruta de las Flores famous for its night markets
  • Meet former guerrillas and hear their story of the civil war
  • Taste fresh ceviche on the Pacific Coast
  • Hike in Pico Bonito National Park
  • Dine with a leading archaeologist of Copan

With San Pedro Sula as your gateway into Honduras, this holiday idea really begins in the forest of the Pico Bonito National Park just inland from the Caribbean Coast. Stay in a Jungle lodge where daily walks, bird watching, horse riding, kayaking and rafting are offered.

Your journey continues to the pretty colonial town of Gracias, a jewel of the west, which in the 16th Century was the capital of the Spanish Central America. Travel to Copan where one of the most significant Maya ruins stand, and known most famously for the intricately carved stone stelae.  It is also possible to organise a fascinating dinner with David Sedat, a leading archaeologist who led an excavation expedition which found the earliest royal tomb in Copan.

From Copan, cross the border to the delightful town of Suchitoto in El Salvador.  Here you can experience the slower paced life of the rural communities, attend a mass, and head up into the hills and visit Indigo workshops and meet former guerrillas who formed a mountain stronghold when Suchitoto found itself, briefly, at the centre of the civil war.

Continue your journey through El Salvador along the Ruta de las Flores, named so for the abundance of white coffee flowers visible during May and the wildflowers that carpet the hills during October to February.  Apart from the surprisingly beautiful scenery and rife coffee production, this area is also known for its crafts, night markets and festivals.

Finally end your journey on the coast at Barra de Santiago where the Pacific rollers beat the volcanic sands. Ceviche has never tasted better and the small Cocotera hotel is the perfect place to unwind between the palms under the Central American sun.

Copán remained engulfed in jungle until the 1930s, when the Carnegie Institute finally organised for the ruins to be liberated from the forest's clutches. Excavations and reconstruction have continued since then, finally exposing this glorious city's hidden architectural treasures.

Spend the day exploring Copán and examining the city's sites, accompanied by the colourful scarlet macaws that call the ruins their home. See the famous intricately-carved stelae, a stunning reconstructed hieroglyphic stairway, archaeological tunnels and excellent museum.

Afterwards, visit Los Sapos, ancient toad-shaped rocks. It was here that Maya women when to give birth.

Sitting in a fertile river valley, Copán is considered by many archaeologists to be one of the most spectacular Maya cities. The city was once formed part of the three largest and most lavish cultural centres of the New World; it is said to have some of the most beautiful pre-Columbian art in the Americas.

Packed with examples of Maya architecture and of huge archaeological significance, this ruined city is a UNESO World Heritage Site. The modern town of Copán Ruinas lies close to the ancient ruins and, despite its tourist appeal, retains a peaceful colonial vibe.
