Peten is home to tangled jungle, exotic animals and fascinating Mayan ruins. Animals and birds of all shapes, sizes and colour inhabit the forests that were once home to an astutely developed group of people, irrevocably linked to their environment. The monumental temples and pyramids of Tikal are world class, but deeper into the northern jungles the ancient cities of Uaxactun, Altar de los Sacrificios and Sayaxche will welcome the few visitors who venture into the wild.
