Dzanga bai
Lowland gorillas
Dzanga bai (bai is the local word for a saline or clearing in the forest) is an elephant oasis in the middle of the rainforest in equatorial Africa, more specifically the Central African Republic.
Many other clearings exist in the immediate vicinity of Dzanga, but none is known to consistently attract so many animals - elephants, sitatungas, giant forest hogs, forest buffalos, various species of monkey and duikers - thus making Dzanga an internationally exceptional site.
Being in the mirador at the edge of the bai is like having front row seats for the greatest show on earth with the most fantastic set design imaginable. Below is a scene of indescribable natural beauty. The backdrop is dark, concealing green forest. Centre stage is a muddy quagmire: elephant heaven.
