Mérida
The bohemian town of Mérida is perched on a plateau carved by the Rio Chamu and flanked by two jagged Andean ridges; the Sierra Nevada and Sierra La Culata.
Merida most famous attraction is El Teleférico; the longest and highest cable car in the world. The cable system travels a staggering 13 kilometres (8 miles) before peaking at the summit of Pico Espejo at 4,765m (15,629 ft). The journey makes numerous stops along the way and is best travelled early morning for superb views across the valley. Trekking, horse riding and climbing are further ways to explore this rugged mountain range.
Merida is also a thriving university town with an ample assortment museums, galleries, café’s and restaurants. Few colonial buildings remain in the town, however, the baroque splendour of Catedral Metropolitana is an impressive must-see nestled on Plaza Bolivar.
