Trip Summary
Join explorer and author Hugh Thomson on this in-depth journey through the Inca heartland of Cusco and the Sacred Valley developed specially for the Oxford Alumni Travel Programme visiting Machu Picchu. Travel to rarely visited ruins, enjoy spectacular views and learn about the fascinating history and amazing culture of the Inca civilisation as discovered by Hiram Bingham.
This exploration of the Sacred Valley takes in sights often missed by those in a hurry to get to Machu Picchu and the charasmatic Senor de Torrechayoc festival in Urubamba celebrating how the locals supported each other following an earthquake in 1650. This is an incredibly local event which is authentic and a delight for the senses.
The combination of mainly downhill walks, artisan markets, varied sights and progression through Inca history provides the perfect build up for our journey to Machu Picchu and beyond. Following a thorough visit of this enigmatic site, we head further into the jungle by train and vehicle to the remote Vilcabamba region, home to many incredible Inca sites including the famous 'White Rock'.
The group will be led by explorer and author, Hugh Thomson. Since 1982, Hugh has led many expeditions to Peru becoming one of the foremost modern explorers of Inca settlements. He wrote his first book 'The White Rock' after a 20 year quest to explore and understand beyond Machu Picchu.
