Valparaiso

Wall mural, Valparaiso, Chile

Valparaiso lies on the south side of a broad, open bay facing the Pacific Ocean, 84 miles (140 km) in the Central Valley, northwest of Santiago. The ramshackle, sinuous streets of Valparaiso and the antiquated funiculars offer a walking tour unlike any other. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features antique Victorian mansions and colourful tin houses lining terraced walkways that wind around precipitous hills. Sweeping seaward views and atmospheric restaurants and cafes are prevalent, but its Valparaiso's bars that brought this city notoriety. It is fascinating to explore the faded remains of this once-thriving port town, now home to many artists and artesans.

Valparaiso serves as a fine addition to any tailor-made holiday through Chile and is easily accessible from Santiago and the winelands. Visitors may like to explore the central region by hire car to offer that little extra flexibiity to an itinerary.
