A little more about Recife & Olinda
Recife, the state capital of Pernambuco, is a large and bustling industrial city used as a transit point to Olinda, and home to resorts such as Porto de Galinhas and Nannai Beach. Although much of Recife’s colonial architecture is swathed by clusters of glassy skyscrapers, it does offer some pockets of historical interest particularly on Pátio de São Pedro.
A short drive from Recife, colonial UESCO-listed Olinda sits atop a palm tree filled hill, overlooking the turquoise ocean. The blend of Dutch and Portuguese influence can be seen across the town, particularly evident in the beautiful Baroque churches, brightly coloured colonial buildings and pretty plazas. A stay at one of the town’s charming pousadas makes for a lovely combination with a few relaxing days on the coast.
For a more memorable experience of Pernambuco visit Recife and Olinda during the vivacious carnival season. Don’t miss the elaborate costumes and mesmerising beats of the multicultural Galo da Madrugada street parade in Recife, or the bloco’s (street bands) leading a parade of enormous dolls through the cobblestone streets of Olinda.
When to go
A year round destination, however September through to April are the driest months with lovely sunny days.
