La Paz

La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz, the highest capital in the world at a staggering 3600m (11,800ft), is also one of the most spectacular. Clinging tenuously to its steep canyon walls dominated by magnificent snow-covered peaks of Mount Illimani, the city's urban sprawl is both dramatic and breathtaking and a view that can be appreciated west of the city centre at Parque Laikacota.

Tradition blends seamlessly with the 21st century in La Paz, from the intriguing witches' market where outlandish souvenirs include dried toads and aphrodisiacs, to the endearingly beautiful colonial cathedral set alongside stately government buildings on Plaza Murillo. Several museums offer insight into Bolivia's colonial and indigenous past, as do the houses on Calle Jaen, Plaza San Francisco and the Congresso Nacional. Folk music is prevalent throughout Andean culture and for dedicated fans a visit to watch traditional Andean music performed by local musicians in an authentic peñas (music club) is a must-see.
