Steppes Travel began offering tailor made holidays to Guyana over 11 years ago. Our specialist, James Armitage has explored many of the highlights of Guyana. He has ventured into the depths of the Amazon rainforest, searched for jaguar in the Iwokrama Forest and followed in the footsteps of the BBC’s ‘Lost Land of the Jaguar’ camping on the banks of the Rewa River.

Guyana is largely an unexplored land of pristine wilderness that has a mixture of Caribbean and Amerindian influences, virgin rainforest and sprawling river systems.

Georgetown, Guyana's colonial capital, lies at the mouth of the Demerara River. Sites include Stabroek Market, the national museum, the Botanical Gardens and St George's Cathedral, the supposed tallest wooden structure in the world.

Out of the capital, on the Potaro River are the impressive Kaieteur Falls, isolated in dense tropical rainforest. Jungle adventures abound and the wildlife here is spectacular. Several national parks and wildlife reserves protect numerous animals such as the Giant Otter, armadillo, anteater, tapir, ocelot, monkeys and the resplendent cock of the rock.

Whether you wish to watch a cricket match, join a guided tour of the sugar or cassava plantations or explore the Amazon rainforest, a holiday in Guyana is a fantastic opportunity to discover amazing wildlife, enjoy the local colour and people and explore this little discovered country.
