Alaska Holidays – Canoeing the Icy Strait

Alaska Cruise Holidays

The holiday was just excellent. We had whales breaching after dinner on the first night, bubble net feeding on day two and bears swimming in front of the boat.

Steppes Travel have been specialising in Alaskan small ship cruises for a number of years and we offer the widest choice of small expeditionary and luxury style boats carrying between 12 and 86 passengers. Alex draws on his first hand experience, having travelled on board Safari Explorer, when talking about Alaska and is experienced in designing exciting pre and post cruise extensions in both Alaska and British Columbia.

A vast wilderness of labyrinthine channels, dramatic scenery and untamed forest offering unrivalled whale and bear watching, Alaska’s Inside Passage answers the travellers call of the wild.

Often so vast and roadless that many areas still remain inaccessible, a small ship offers the freedom of a flexible itinerary and access to the quieter backwaters, a perfect way to get up close to its wildlife. In the summer months, Humpback whales congregate in Alaska’s rich waters in vast numbers, and it’s not uncommon to find your ship or zodiac surrounded by these magnificent beasts. On land, brown (grizzly) and black bears are numerous and can be observed either foraging along the shoreline or fishing at waterfalls, particularly on Admiralty and Barenhof Islands which claim some of the densest bear populations anywhere.

Days will be busy exploring accompanied by your enthusiastic guides, but with ample time to relax as well. Hike through the lush rainforest, take to the zodiacs for spontaneous whale watching, kayak around icebergs and end the day anchored in a silent cove. Choose from a selection of expeditionary cruises aboard a choice of small boats with frequent departures throughout the summer, from May to late August. Private charters are available; ideally suited for extended families or groups.
