Adrère Amellal

Western Desert, Adrere Amellal

Located 16 kilometres from the centre of Siwa lies Adrère Amellal and its unique Eco Lodge. Built in a traditional Berber style the buildings blend naturally into the landscape, walls are made of rock salt, and palm is used for roofing. There can be few places left like Adrère Amellal where modern communications take second place to the gentle pace of local Berber life.

Each of the hand-built 40 rooms is different, and all have a view of either the salt lake or the Great sea of sand beyond. The furniture and crafts used throughout the hotel pay tribute to nature and to talented local artisanship. With no electricity, the rooms are softly lit with a dozen beeswax candles and the starry desert sky. Other features of the hotel include ancient olive and palm groves where you will find the natural spring, now converted into a pool, and private stables for the use of the guests. You will also be treated to exquisite local cuisine. All herbs and vegetables are handpicked daily from the organic gardens and cooked in traditional honey-glazed clay pots.
