Aswan
Aswan is as far south as you can go before embarking into desert, Nubia and Sudan. It is, effectively, where Egypt ends and offers visitors many different activities and sights. The pace is a little slower, it is a little warmer, and you will notice the Nubians, who have darker skin and are often taller in height. A lovely way to spend an afternoon here is aboard a traditional Felucca sailing to the Botanical Island or Kitchener’s Island.
Aswan is also the launch pad for excursions across Lake Nasser and the desert to Abu Simbel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This can be done by air or for those wanting a more leisurely pace it is also possible to cruise Lake Nasser and visit the monuments relocated on its shores. See our cruises page for more details.
