Gobi Desert

Mongolia, Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs),

Although the word Gobi in Mongolian means desert, the Gobi Desert as we know it lies in the south of the country, on its borders with northern China or Inner Mongolia. This area of Mongolia allows adventurous travellers the opportunity to discover yet more extraordinary treasures including the Yolyn Am, or Eagle Valley, whose walls are so high and steep that ice can often be found in its basin throughout the summer.

Venturing further into the wilderness, travellers can find Khongoriin (Singing) Els - Mongolias highest sand dunes and the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, where the American expedition of the 1950s uncovered a great haul of dinosaur remains. Today, the area can be reached either by air from Ulaanbaatar or, if you prefer to drive, overland via Karakorum, the ancient walled city which was once the capital of the Mongolian Empire under Genghis Khan.
