Midnight Mass in St Petersburg
Easter is the biggest of the Russian Orthodox celebrations. Letters from St Petersburg in the 19th century describe how crowds gathered outside the church before midnight waiting for the doors to burst open and the priest to announce that Christ has risen. Candles are lit to signify the resurrection and the priest leads the procession three times round the church.
This year the Russian Easter falls on 24 April and to witness the midnight mass on the Saturday is a wonderful experience. Travel to St Petersburg for three nights, staying at the Angleterre Hotel, opposite the beautiful St Isaac’s Cathedral. While here you’ll be taken to the midnight mass service, enjoy two half days of private, guided sightseeing to explore the Hermitage, the city and an extra Easter Mass on the Sunday at St Nikolas Cathedral. Cost from £950.00 per person.
