A little more about the Central Highlands
The central highlands and its beautiful surroundings are an essential stopping point for those travellers exploring this marvellously lush country. Whether it is to visit the famous Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage or to lose oneself in the attractive Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, this region offers more than just vast expansive tea plantations and mountainside hugging, montane forests. It has a fascinating history which dates back to colonial times.

Kandy is the largest city in the region, and blends in perfectly with its striking surrounding scenery. Full of traditional bustling Asian markets and small antique shops it was once Sri Lanka’s capital city during the Sinhalese kingdom reign. It offers more of a relaxed atmosphere than Colombo and after dusk the city seems to come to a complete stop.

Over the past few years development has allowed a variety of accommodations and restaurants to flourish. The best place to stay is the elegant Kandy House where guests may be joined by chatty monkeys and exotic birds during their morning Sri Lankan coffee on the terrace.

A very easy going region offering another side to the diversity Sri Lanka offers travellers, and definitely well worth a visit.

When to go
Sri Lanka can be visited year round. The majority of sites are best visited between November to March.
