Charlotte Lawton was born and brought up in Asia. As soon as she graduated from university she returned to independently explore this part of the world she so loved. Since joining the East team at Steppes Travel in 2002 she returned to Nepal to explore this Hindu Kingdom in more depth. She describes Nepal as incredibly vibrant with a fascinating culture and incredible scenery, however the most special thing about Nepal are the people who are generous, welcoming and so very proud of their heritage.
A journey to Nepal starts in Kathmandu and a visit to the towns of Patan and Bhakatpur whose intricate architecture reflects their origins in the Hindu religion. Bustling streets, endless stalls, markets, cows and people form an intoxicating kaleidoscope of noise and colour. An early morning flight from Kathmandu Airport along the Himalayas where, on a clear day, Everest can be seen and two or three days river rafting on one of the many rivers are activities that all come highly recommended. For those keen trekkers, the walking here is unmatched with the opportunity of doing short day hikes or week long treks through the stunning Himalayan landscape.
A Nepal holiday is perfect for families with children of all ages. Little children can be carried by porters and all of them can experience camping and the seemingly inexhaustible supply of delicious food. There is also wildlife adventure to be had at Chitwan National Park where you ride out on elephants through the tall grasslands looking for the one horned Indian rhinoceros and the elusive tiger.
