A Sketchbook Journey to Northern India with Maxine Relton

Indian Art
Download detailed itinerary

This very special journey to northern India has been designed for those who wish to experience a richly diverse culture, combined with a chance to learn the art of quick and vivid sketches, even if you have little or no experience of drawing and painting. Equally welcome on the trip are those who would prefer to stick to photography, or are content to sit back and absorb the endlessly fascinating sights and sounds around.

The first week: Maxine will guide every opportunity to capture the immediacy of the sights around you with simple, telling sketches. She will offer tips on rapid line drawing, colour mixing, simple ways of mastering perspective, dramatic use of tone, figure drawing and more. There will be no shortage of exciting subjects, with time during the first week, particularly in the rural area of Barli, to try out and develop your skills.

The second week: No formal focus on sketching as such, but this part of the trip gives you time to experience in your own way the varied landscapes, impressive ancient temples and colourful city scenes that will hopefully inspire you to practise your sketching further or catch lasting memories with your camera. Maxine will be on hand to assist if need be, but in a less structured way than in week one. The journey ends with an immersion in bustling city life and a brief final session with Maxine to help with any last suggestions to finish off your travel journal.
