Hooghly River Cruise

locals on Hooghly River, India

The ship is very comfortable, with a lovely crew and wonderful food, and we were in frequent contact with village India and its constant fascinations.

James & Hilary Arnold-Baker

Why Join This Cruise:

  • Unlock the charm and friendliness of rural West Bengal, travelling by small ship along the little known but charming Hooghly River, an offshoot of India’s sacred River Ganges
  • Fascinating daily guided excursions travelling by cyclo and on foot visiting local villages and markets, as well as exploring the palaces, temples and tombs of successive ruling dynasties
  • Travelling by small boat (max. 24 passengers), offers both a practical and comfortable way to explore this region little accessed by other tourists, while providing a very different India holiday experience

Trip Overview
Winding your way from Farakka, where the Hooghly splits from The Ganges, southwards to Calcutta, this is a charming river cruise through the little visited villages and towns of rural West Bengal. En route, undertake a varied programme of daily guided excursions by country boat, cyclo and on foot to palaces, temples and ruins of successive dynasties, a battle field tour of Plaissey where Clive’s victory changed the course of Indian history, as well as village visits where you are guaranteed a very warm welcome. Travelling by small ship provides an ever changing vista of rural bankside life, from farmers tending their fields and fishermen casting their nets, to bathers at the ghats. This voyage will appeal as much to the first India time visitor looking for a soft introduction as to returning travellers in search of a new and unique India experience.
