Western Bhutan
Western Bhutan comprises of a vast array of magnificent valleys including Paro, Thimpu, Punakha and Phobjijka each of which displays the recognisable colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
Western Bhutan is the busiest region in the country, easily accessed through the Indian border town of Phuntsholing and from Paro following great improvements to roads and infrastrucure. Local hotels and lodges offer a good level of accommodation and with the introduction of luxury hotels by Aman Resorts, Como Hotels and the Taj Group you can explore this fascinating area of Bhutan in great comfort. Visitors to this region will experience some excellent day hikes, wander around ancient Buddhist monasteries, take in local weekly markets and mix with the wonderfully gentle and friendly Bhutanese people.
One of the most remote valleys in the region is the Haa valley, located in the far west it offers stunning far-reaching views. The most built up area is the Thimphu valley, the capital of Bhutan and then east of here lies the remarkable Black Mountain range which creates the main barrier between the east and the west of Bhutan. In addition to the stunning valleys and mountains this region is also home to some of the oldest dzongs in the whole country, a true cultural highlight.
