Trip Overview
This 19 day Bhutanese Odyssey is a true adventure and takes you to some of the remoter parts of this beautiful and hidden Himalayan Kingdom. You enter Bhutan from the southeast at Samdrup Jonkhar, a small frontier town where the mountains meet the Indian Assamese plain. Your journey begins in a subtropical climate but the accent is steep and quickly climbs up to the cooler and fresher mountain air. Your first stop is Trashigang where you spend a few days exploring. The altitude is approxiately 1300 metres allowing you to acclimatise slowly. You continue west on windy, narrow mountain roads, through some of the most stunning scenery, stopping to visit rural villages and seeing the unique culture. Mongar is an impressive mountainside town where you cross into Central Bhutan and the Bumthang Valleys. The valleys are wide and open here, unlike other parts of Bhutan, which makes it excellent for crop growing and keeping livestock. This is a pretty area with plenty to see. Continue through Trongsa and visit the magnificent Dzong before entering the Probijkha Valley to sight a Black Necked Crane! Punakha Dzong is one of the most beautiful and well worth a visit before you finally pass through the capital Thimpu and end your journey in Paro where you can rest and relax and visit the famous Tigers Nest Monastery.
