Charlotte Lawton was born and brought up in Asia so as soon as she graduated from university she returned to independently explore this part of the world she so loved. Since joining the East team at Steppes Travel in 2002 she has continued travelling through this region visiting Bhutan a number of times, exploring this beautiful country by road and on foot. Bhutan has become one of her favourite destinations as it offers peace and tranquillity, unmatched physical beauty, an attractive culture and people and a genuine sense of wellbeing and enlightenment. Bhutan is a tonic for the soul and should be visited by everyone once in their lifetime!
Bhutan is a remarkable country of fascinating lifestyles and surprises in every region. Since opening its doors to tourism in the 1980s, it has continuously strived to maintain its cultural identity by resisting western influences; limiting the number of foreign visitors to 7,000 per year and making it expensive to visit. Travel to Bhutan was considered the preserve of the more dedicated traveller as the standards of hotels left much to be desired. Travel within the country was challenging, the roads were demanding and the standard of hotel accommodation was very poor.
However with the opening of luxury lodges owned by the Aman Resorts and Como Hotels, holidays to Bhutan have taken on a different aspect. Bhutan offers the opportunity to travel through a country where the culture has been preserved and a house is judged not for its size or decoration but by the hospitality it offers. It is a truly remarkable country offering a glimpse into a completely different style of life and one which should remain at the top of anyone's wish list.
