Steppes Travel began life offering tailor-made tours to Asia over 20 years ago, and Southeast Asia and The Mekong continue to be an area we know intimately. Sally and Paul in our East department are very experienced at designing tailor-made land-based itineraries incorporating The Mekong in Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, while travellers keen to explore the Mekong by boat should talk to Alex who’s personally undertaken a Mekong voyage and travelled extensively through much of this intoxicating region.
Weaving snakelike through Southeast Asia, from the bustling Vietnamese delta, upstream through Cambodia and onto Laos, the Mekong River plays a pivotal role for literally millions of people throughout the region. Mekong River life is nothing short of bustling and busy, with constant activity to observe from river craft and fisherman, to floating markets and traditional villages, while the local cuisine has increasingly been attracting the interest of top international chefs. As beautiful, fascinating and diverse as The Mekong River is though, it’s the people who call it home that are the real stars of any journey along this magical river.
The optimal time to travel is between October and April, with week long Mekong River cruises on a choice of small comfortable and luxury boats, such as The Jayavarman and Jahan, available throughout the year.
