Indonesia Holidays

Indonesia, Lombok, small boat in sea

One of the largest countries in the world, Indonesia is an elongated chain of several thousand islands which stretch for hundreds of miles.

Although perhaps best known for the beaches of Bali, there are a myriad of other islands to explore, many of which have their own languages, culture and religions. On Java, for instance, there is the huge Buddhist temple of Borobudur. Built around 800, it remains one of the most important sites in south East Asia. On Sumatra, there are the tombs of the Batak kings; Sulawesi has superb diving and the incomparable culture of the Toraja with their cliff side graves; in the interior of Borneo over 200 tribes of the Dayak ethnic group still live in long houses but have given up their grisly headhunting days, although they still use blow pipes. On Komodo, the dragons continue to enthrall anyone who can spend the time to get there, while much of Irian Jaya remains largely unknown.

The list of opportunities on offer in Indonesia is endless; it is a fascinating destination offering truly fabulous beach resorts that are the epitome of luxury. The country as a whole is hard to even scratch the surface without a minimum of two months holiday.
