Sarawak
Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia. It is also wonderfully exotic; home to the world's largest flower, flying squirrels, insect eating plants and quantities of yet unnamed flora and fauna. Furthermore, the ancient virgin rainforest is home to 27 ethnic people, each with their own distinct language, culture and lifestyle.
Bako is Sarawaks oldest National Park and is the perfect place to spot proboscis monkeys. Located on the coast interspersed with rocky headlands, mangroves and beaches there are some lovely trails to walk but accommodation is simple.
Another National Park more famed for the indigenous people who live there is Batang Ai where it is possible to stay in a longhouse, the traditional accommodation of the Iban tribe.
The main city of Kuching has a delightfully laid back, riverside feel and a rich history. Less known and hence less visited is the Orangutan sanctuary of Semenggoh where fewer orangutans reside but a more peaceful and less touristy experience can be enjoyed.
Deeper into this state lies Gunung Mulu National Park with some wonderful caves, excellent trekking & the stone forest of pinnacles.
