Borneo Holidays

Our dawn trip on the Kinabatangan river was a super experience - seeing the wildlife awaken. And of course the Orangutans!

Mr & Mrs Fair, April 2010

  • Walk along the riverside in the colonial city of Kuching
  • Experience world-class diving on the tropical islands of Lankayan and Sipadan
  • Spot Proboscis monkey and Pygmy Elephant from your boat safari on the Kintabatangan river
  • Trek up Mount Kinabalu and see the sunrise from the summit
  • Be enchanted by Asia's only great ape, the iconic orangutan

Charles is our Borneo specialist and is extremely passionate about South East Asia. He has travelled extensively through South East Asia however since joining Steppes he has been lucky enough to recently visit Malaysia in 'Steppes Travel style' rather than on a shoe-string. Highlights of his most recent trip were exploring the less visited islands off south Sabah and the incredible ecosystem of Danum Valley. He hopes to return soon to explore deeper into Sarawak and more of Borneo's hidden islands.

Our Specialists can tailor-make your holiday to Borneo to your exact requirements, be it a family adventure, a luxury honeymoon or venturing off the beaten track to trek or dive.

Borneo is the world's third largest island and is divided between the countries of Malaysia and Indonesia.

Malaysian Borneo is divided into the two states of Sabah and Sarawak and is probably best know for its most endearing primate, the orangutan, which inhabits one of the oldest undisturbed rainforest on the planet. Wildlife watching is very much the highlight of this flora and fauna rich region, however it is also one of the most culturally diverse corners of South East Asia and travelling through both states you can expect to encounter an incredible diversity of dialects and religions.

For those keen to see orangutans in the wild you might like to consider our small group trip to Indonesian Borneo, offering the chance to track these wonderful creatures and get behind the scenes of orangutan conservation.

Voyaging around the island is an ideal way to explore all the regions Borneo has to offer. Off the north coast of Sabah lie many idyllic islands perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving during the warm day and, at nightfall, many offer the opportunity to view turtles coming ashore or hatchlings being released.
