Indonesia is a country that Steppes have been visiting since the early days; between the team we have travelled this diverse archipelago from east to west. Sally has recently returned from her third visit and would be delighted to talk through the contrasting islands, and how they can best be combined for your Indonesia holidays. Visit the cultural sights of Java, or head to Bali to explore the less developed eastern and western coasts, or venture further afield to Sulawesi and Moyo and let Sally advice you on the finer details from dive sites to the wonderful hotels.
One of the largest countries in the world, Indonesia is an elongated chain of several thousand islands which stretch for hundreds of miles.
Perhaps best known for the beaches of Bali, there are a myriad of other islands to explore, many of which have their own languages, culture and religions. Java is home to the huge Buddhist temple of Borobudur, built around 800 AD; it remains one of the most important sites in South East Asia. On Sumatra, there are the tombs of the Batak kings and Sulawesi has superb diving and the incomparable culture of the Toraja with their cliff side graves.
The interior of Borneo holds over 200 tribes of the Dayak ethnic group, who still live in long houses but have given up their grisly headhunting days! Although they still use traditional blow pipes. On Komodo, the dragons continue to enthral anyone who can spend the time to get there, while much of Irian Jaya remains largely unknown.
The list of opportunities on offer for holidays in Indonesia is endless; it is a fascinating destination offering truly fabulous beach resorts that are the epitome of luxury. To even scratch the surface of this beautiful country could take months!
