Black Sea Coast Holidays
Often overlooked by travellers, this craggy and spectacular coastline comes as a surprise with its wealth of history and dramatic scenery. Dense alpine forests cover the mountaintops while lush vegetation and bountiful crops including tea, tobacco, corn and hazelnuts grow in the lower elevations and valleys. In the springtime, delicate wild-flower blossoms carpet the rolling meadows of the eastern hills. Legend has it that Jason led his Argonauts along this coast in quest of the Golden Fleece.
Just south of the cosmopolitan city of Trazbon is one of the region’s most spectacular sites - Sumela Monastery. Founded in Byzantine times and abandoned after the creation of the Turkish Republic this incredible monastery clings to a sheer rock face 1200 metres above alpine forests and mountain streams.
Sinop is one of the most beautiful natural harbours on the Black Sea coast & has been a trading port for over a thousand years. Mainly visited by local tourists, it is famous for its traditional nautical wood carvings, good crystal and the original cotton clothes of the city.
