Basilicata

Basilicata

Basilicata is relatively unknown even for Italians.  Venture off the beaten track from the Amalfi Coast and Naples into this fascinating region which has a great deal to offer the visitor.  The highlight of your visit is Matera, also known as the Sassi, a fabulous troglodyte town of prehistoric caves and rock cut dwellings dating back to Byzantine times. The Sassi has been declared a UNESCO heritage site showing some of the best examples of cave architecture in the Mediterranean.  The best way to visit this part of the city is by foot so you can explore all the nooks and narrow alleyways.  Some of the old caves have been converted and restored into some wonderful bars, restaurants and hotels.  Another draw to Matera is the location of Sassi, across the canyon of the Gravina River, facing the dramatic scenery of Murgia National Park.  The park provides some fantastic hiking and further exploration into 6 century BC rock hewn churches.  A visit to this region combines really well with a coastal holiday Puglia or Amalfi.
