Lake Sevan Holidays

Lake Sevan, Armenia

An hour's drive from Yerevan brings you to Lake Sevan. This freshwater lake of volcanic origin is situated at an altitude of about 6,500 feet, with crystal-clear water which changes colour throughout the day. Famous for its fish, it appears turquoise in direct sunlight, then turns greenish and finally becomes grey toward evening. The shores of the lake are edged by white sandy beaches which are un-crowded and make a perfect spot for a lazy afternoon taking in the magnificent surroundings.

Among the most interesting sites are the Sevanavank Monastery which stands on a rocky peninsula jutting out into the lake and the two churches of Arakelots (The Apostles) and Astvatsatsin. These were carved from a plentiful local green stone and stand out from the others which are all made of tuff.
