Paul Craven has been with Steppes Travel for 16 years and true 'Travel Beyond the Ordinary' is what he loves most - he is in his element when trekking through remote landscapes, exploring hidden backstreets and generally getting off the beaten track and setting foot where few have done before.
His knowledge of border crossings and their complications would be hard to beat and many of the wonderful trips he prepares for our clients can combine 4 or 5 countries over several months. During his extensive travels Paul has also built up an interesting and often amusing photo gallery of the 'world's worst toilets'!
Paul can tailor-make your holiday to your exact requirements; be it a family adventure, a luxury holiday, a multi-country trip or venturing off the beaten track.
Although Armenia once extended from the Black Sea to the Caspian, today it is confined to an area smaller than Belgium and lies sandwiched between Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey. Consequently, many of its important historical monuments now lie in other countries.
Having been the first country in the world to formally adopt Christianity in 301AD, the landscape is dotted with beautiful old churches, many of which pre date the 10th century. In the north, Lake Sevan covers a large part of the country but, elsewhere, you will find mountains, green valleys and wide plateaus. Armenia is only just emerging as a tourist destination, but the gentle and hospitable people will extend a warm greeting to all who visit. It is also home to a number of monasteries, many situated in Lori Province to the north of Lake Sevan, two of which, Haghpat and Sanahin, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
For a longer trip a lovely option is to combine your holiday to Armenia with neighbouring Georgia and/or Azerbaijan - for further details on this see our journey ideas.
