Canopy Tower

Canopy Tower, Exterior

Canopy Tower is a very eccentric-looking eco-lodge. Originally constructed during the 1960’s as a US military radar tower, used to sweep the area during the Cold War, it is now renowned as one of the top birding lodges in Panama with exceptional views across the canopy of Soberania National Park, the skyline of Panama City and the Panama Canal beyond.

From its hilltop vantage point, the rather austere 30ft tall metal structure opens to 12 simple yet comfortable guest rooms, arranged over two treetop levels and accessed by a flight of stairs. Room furnishings are few with just a smattering of teak furniture and comfortable single or double beds. Double rooms only, benefit from a private bathroom and all rooms have ceiling fans. Wall partitions are thin but awaking to the sound of howler monkeys and toucans frolicking beyond your window is somewhat satisfying.

Hearty meals are served in the dining area with a lounge and bar on the top floor, accompanied with panoramic picture windows presenting uncompromising views. Hammocks strung between steel columns beckon further relaxation in this tranquil tree top setting.

Canopy Tower offers some of the most reputable birding guides, optimising your chances of glimpsing from a variety of over 596 bird species. Ideal for birding enthusiasts who would prefer to stay outside of the city, located a 30 minute drive away, Canopy Tower also offers an intimate opportunity for wildlife photographers. The lodge can also organise local excursions to some of the most appealing attractions including Miraflores Locks and the Barro Colorado Nature Monument at Gatun Lake.
