Darien

Embera Indians, Panama

The Darien province is an unspoiled region for adventurous tourists. It extends to an area of 16,000 km2 covered by rivers and thick jungle. The rainforest in the Darien National Park is so dense that it is the only place where the Pan-American Highway running from Alaska down to Argentina and Chile, does not penetrate.

The population of Darien is mainly of Indigenous groups, descendants of black fugitive slaves brought to the Isthmus during colonial times. Additionally the province is also inhabited by natives of the Wounaan and Embera Indian tribes that migrated from Choc in Colombia, successfully maintaining thousand year old traditions inside the Darien National Province.

The Darien is also home to the Harpy Eagle, the world’s largest predator bird, once in danger of extinction and now on its way back thanks to Panamanian conservationists and the Pelegrine Foundation. This truly wild and nature-dense region is heaven for adventurers, birders and nature lovers.
