Colon
The city of Colon is located on the Caribbean coast at the Atlantic mouth of the Panama Canal. Colon is arguably most famous for its Duty Free Trading Zone, a walled expanse of wholesalers that attracts international traders and chancers alike.
Colon hosts a colourful reminder of its former glory when in the 1950s it featured as one of the most fashionable cruising destinations. Its steady decline has been evident though, and Colon suffered heavily when US troops left Panama and cruise ships stopped anchoring there. The near future does bring new hope to Colon, as cruise ships are set to once more embark from its shores and new hotels have been built as a result, providing visitors with a greater choice of accommodation in order to visit the San Lorenzo Fort overlooking Rio Chagres and the historical bay of Portobelo.
