Trip Overview
Three million years ago a thin strip of land emerged from the sea, uniting the Americas, defining Panama as a transit point. For hundreds of years man has crossed this strip of land linking the oceans. In 1888 construction of the Panama Canal began and after a chequered history of disease and disaster it was officially opened in 1920 by US President Woodrow Wilson.

This voyage combines a full transit of the Panama Canal, over-nighting in Lake Gatun, with exploration of the wildlife wonders of the Darien jungle and the little known Pearl Islands. Discover this region of cultural diversity by small boat allowing you to explore deeper into the jungles where you will meet The Embera, the indigenous people who have retained their traditional way of life. On the Atlantic side visit colonial forts and the Caribbean town of Portabelo, founded by Christopher Columbus. Finally, return to Panama City by picturesque trans–isthmus railway.
