Managua Holidays
Managua is a hot and sultry urban expanse sprawling the South Western shores of Lake Managua, beneath the towering flanks of extinct volcanoes, crater lakes and lagoons. A fairly dramatic setting for the nation's capital with its dizzying network of unsigned landmarks and tree lined boulevards. Managua was no stranger to disasters and unrest but now enjoys a reputation as the 'City of Peace', and is certainly a good hub from which to begin exploring Nicaragua.
Even if your stop in Managua is brief, do make time to visit the Old Cathedral, which symbolises life both pre and post the great earthquake of 1972. Stroll through the Peace Park which was built as a monument to mark the end of the Contra War and is the resting place for thousand AK-47's, some of which are visible. A stop at the Parque Nacional del Loma de Tiscapa offers visitors stunning views of the city and its volcanoes and only a short drive from Managua is the Chocoyero Nature Reserve home to an abundance of monkeys and parakeets. For night owls there are many upmarket bars, restaurants and clubs to experience and enjoy a drink with the city's elite.
