Caribbean Coast
Aside from being a region where nature is largely untouched by human hands, Nicaragua's Caribbean Coast is an area of humid tropical rainforest sparsely populated by an eclectic mix of Miskito and Mayangna Indians, English buccaneers and Afro-Caribbean's.
The principle harbour town of Bluefields was devasted by Hurricane Juana in 1988; its current ensemble being a meagre shadow of its former self. Most visitors to Bluefields are merely passing through enroute to the idyllic Laguna de Perles (Pearl Lagoon) and its surrounding islets. Moreover, Bluefields provides access to the picture-postcard shores of the Corn Islands. Snorkelling and diving opportunities here are plentiful in the phenomenal coral reef, heightened by the sunken Spanish galleon close to Big Corn Island and a series of intriguing underwater caves at Little Corn Island.
