Antigua Holidays

Street Scene, Antigua

Founded by the Spanish, Antigua has been bedevilled by earthquakes that have left great churches and beautiful convents gasping for restoration. The immeasurable value of the remaining monuments has finally been appreciated and the town has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Restoration continues in earnest. Today you can explore these fascinating monuments, stroll the cobblestone streets, enjoy a good coffee overlooking the central plaza or bargain with the Indian families at the local markets. What is more, the volcanoes of Agua, Acatenango and Fuego are not far away should you wish to brave their slopes. During Easter week the town comes alive with religious celebrations and the streets are lined with carpets of petals, fruit and flowers.
