Stann Creek
Stann Creek meaning ‘sweet water’ in Garifuna, is a delightful district with many excellent beaches and Mayan villages which dot the region amid citrus groves.
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is Belize’s largest wildlife reserve covering 150 square miles of tropical forest trailed by the Maya Mountains which escalate most impressively into Victoria Peak, the highest mountain in Belize which presides over the sanctuary. The park offers the best chance, in Latin America, of seeing the elusive jaguar and is also home to the puma, margay, jaguarundi and ocelot.
Dangriga, the largest town in southern Belize, bursts into life each year on Settlement Day when Garifuna people celebrate their heritage with an explosion of drums, colour and Punta dancing. Stann Creek also provides relatively easy access to Hummingbird Highway and the central cayes.
