Cayo District

Cayo District, Belize

West of Belize City, the slender green trees of Mountain Pine Ridge help create a rustic, outdoor playground of chilly crystalline rivers, intricate cave networks and a maze of hiking trails. Meandering through this picturesque countryside is the tranquil River Macal and the relatively fast flowing River Mopan ideal for tubing, canoeing and kayaking. Set deep in thick ancient jungle are the mysterious Mayan ruins of Xunantunich and Caracol. Also noteworthy in this area is the excellent Belize Zoo and the lively, bustling town of San Ignacio.
